De film is een bitterzoete, tragikomische kijk op zowel de politieke verdeeldheid van een land als familieproblemen en -probleempjes vanuit het standpunt van een guitig knaapje. Soms verrassend leuk, soms aangrijpend, maar ook vaak melig en hoe dan ook langdradig. Werd tot een ieders verbazing bekroond met de Gouden Palm op het Festival van Cannes 1985.
