Maastricht University's Executive Board has approved the plan to renew the animal research facility for UM and Maastricht UMC+ at the existing location at Universiteitssingel 50 (UNS50). A new building is therefore off the table. This decision was taken in agreement with the Maastricht UMC+ Executive Board and the Board of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. The renovation of the entire building at UNS50 has already begun; the furnishing of the new animal facility will be part of this.

The animals’ living quarters in the current BMC have been designed in accordance with the latest insights. The research rooms, too, are fit for purpose and minimise any discomfort for the animals. Both the carers of the animals and the researchers conducting the experiments make every effort to maximise the wellbeing of the animals. The new building, which will also have a pasture for larger animals such as pigs, sheep, goats and rabbits (a few dozen per year), will contribute to this effort.

Our research institute, the Netherlands Cancer Institute, is among the world leaders in research to better understand and treat cancer. For this we use many different research methods. Our researchers also use mice, and sometimes rats, to study cancer and develop new treatments. We find it important to be open about this. This is why we co-drafted and signed the Dutch 'Transparency Agreement on Animal Testing' in 2021. This agreement aims at creating a more transparent climate around animal testing, a subject that usually leads to fierce discussions in society, the media and politics.
